In a joint press conference on Wednesday, the RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Crime Centre (NCECC), Sûreté du Québec, Ontario Provincial Police, Peel Regional Police, and Durham Regional Police, revealed their findings in an 11-day investigation, referred to as Project STEEL.
This coordinated national operation targeted online child sexual exploitation offenders while focusing on safeguarding children. Investigations into 306 individuals were concluded, with 342 the sole authorization and 192 search warrants executed. Though 395 investigations are still ongoing, an NCECC inspector confirmed 106 individuals have already been arrested, with over 308 charges laid.
In addition, the work of all 63 involved law enforcement partners ensured 40 victims were identified, and that 37 children were safeguarded. It is anticipated that those numbers will grow.
The victims were identified “mainly” as Canadian, with a “small number. from other countries.”
The update will highlight ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable children and address online exploitation.
