The house is fully wired, we have a great battery and inverter system, it is finally time for power regeneration. Living off grid comes with certain challenges, and electricity is certainly one of them. Depending on the location of the build, there are options to choose from, and with the mighty Fraser River right there, it seems like the immediate choice. Here in BC, there is heavy regulation on any body of water that is Salmon bearing, and the Fraser River is a “main vain” so to say, and for that reason it is not an option for hydro generation. Wind is of course another option, but with all of the mixed reviews, I couldn’t justify the investment. Solar is a great option almost anywhere in the world, because when the sun is shining, power is being generated. Here where I am building, solar is a great option simply because we get a lot of sunlight. Winter will be a different challenge, but throughout the summer months, this system should be more than adequate to replenish our power needs.
Originally I wanted to mount the panels on the roof, just to save space and keep everything either in or on the house. It was obvious pretty quickly that this would be beyond my abilities, and there was really no reason the system could not be ground mounted. After taking some time to study the area and the benefits to a ground mount system, it became clear that the system would be more productive as a ground mount instead of fixed to the roof. This is also the easier install, and it prevents the need to put holes in the roof.
Installation was quick, fun and easy. We dug two holes for posts, and buried pressure treated 4×4 posts 5 feet deep, with a pivot mount at the top, and that is basically it. Only a few days in, I don’t have a ton of data to share, but seeing gains up to 655 watts, it is obvious that this system will produce more than enough power for us.
