Just over a year ago, my nightmare began in Trinidad and Tobago. I was arrested on gang-related and money laundering charges, accused of promoting a gang through the videos I filmed there. Those charges were later dropped, only to be replaced with an even bigger one โ sedition. I spent a total of three to four weeks in three different jails, my passport was seized, and I was trapped in the country for three long months. Although I eventually left on my own once my passport was returned, Iโm now banned from returning until a separate deportation case โ currently in front of a judge โ is resolved, which could take years. That case is completely separate from the ongoing sedition case. My nightmare still isnโt over.
A few days ago in virtual court, I was offered the chance to plead guilty to sedition โ no jail time, no criminal record โ just a way for the country to save face. But I am not guilty, and I will not take that plea. I will fight this case and clear my name of these false charges, brought against me by a government more upset with its own gang problem than with the truth.
This is my story โ and my update.
