A security guard in Toronto has been charged with assault, after he was caught on camera allegedly beating a man at a downtown Dollarama. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon, at the store near the intersection of Queen and Sherbourne.
Ricky Gamez, a social worker and witness, saw what was happening and began recording on his phone. He says the customer had spilled coffee inside his shopping bag and wanted to come in to buy paper towels, but the guard refused his entry. That’s when the exchange escalated and the security guard “disconnected and beat his face,” Gamez says.
In a statement, retail chain Dollarama said that it “does not authorize the use of force in any situation” and aims to “promote a store environment which everyone must be treated with respect.”
